Critical Appraisal Workshop

ANZSPM is pleased to announce that PaCCSC (Palliative Care Clinical Studies Collaborative) has organised a pre-conference 'Critical Appraisal Workshop' to coincide with the ANZSPM 2012 Conference in Queenstown. This workshop, open to palliative care professionals attending ANZSPM 2012, will be presented by Dr Narinder Gosall PhD, Superego Café UK. It is a full day event, and will be held at nearby venue, Crowne Plaza, Queenstown on Tuesday 4 September 2012.

International Invited Speakers

Dr Fliss Murtagh, PhD MRCGP
Fliss qualified in medicine in the UK in 1986. She initially trained in General Practice, and worked as a General Practitioner from 1992 – 2000, then undertook specialist training in palliative medicine between 2000 and 2004. She went on to undertake a PhD at King’s College London, on ‘Improving the quality of care of patients with Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease managed without dialysis’ in the Department of Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation at King’s College London. She has now gained a HEFCE Clinical Senior Lecturership – one of the first nationally in Palliative Care. She is based at King’s College London and King’s College Hospital.

She has published on the palliative and end-of-life care needs of renal patients, including on symptoms, withdrawal from dialysis, survival, and use of opioids. Fliss has a keen interest in longitudinal study, including methodological development, and symptom and functional trajectories in the last year of life (including for renal patients). She has also published on information and decision-making preferences in palliative care, and is currently working on further renal palliative care research, factors affecting place of death in non malignant conditions, casemix and economic modelling in palliative care, outcome measurement, and with a European collaborative bringing together research on end of life care across Europe and Africa.

 

Prof Miriam Johnson MD; FRCP; MRCP; MRCGP
Miriam Johnson graduated from Manchester University, UK with honours in 1984. She completed her higher specialist training in palliative medicine in 1999, having gained her MD on “Venous thromboembolism (VTE) in advanced cancer”. During this time she also developed her clinical and research interest in the palliation of breathlessness and palliative care for patients with advanced heart disease.

She is now Reader in Palliative Medicine at the Hull York Medical School and honorary consultant to St Catherine’s Hospice in North Yorkshire. Her research areas include the palliation of breathlessness, palliative care service provision for people with non-malignant disease and the management of VTE in people with advanced disease. She is currently working on projects regarding oxygen in heart failure, non-pharmacological interventions for refractory breathlessness, palliative care needs assessment, place of care and death in haematological cancer, and recognition of advanced disease and dying.

She is Chair of the NCRI breathlessness research group and a co-director of the Thrombosis Research in Advanced Disease (TRAD) Alliance. She is lead palliative care research clinician for her cancer network and is local specialty group lead for palliative care for the North East Yorkshire Northern Lincolnshire region. In conjunction with the local cardiologists, she has developed one of the first joint services for heart patients in the UK and is an invited member of the National Council for Palliative Care’s heart failure policy group.

Continuing Medical Education Points

GPs and primary care doctors may be eligible for RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practitioners), RNZCGP (The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners) and ACRRM (Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine) continuing medical education points. Fellows of the College of Physicians may be eligible for self assessment for CPD points.
