INVITATION TO ATTEND

You are invited to attend the second combined scientific meeting of the Society for Paediatric Anaesthesia in New Zealand and Australia and the Australia and New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgeons. The first meeting of this type was held in Townsville in 2005 and was so successful we have decided to repeat the format. This year the venue is to again be in the beach state of Queensland, at the Hyatt, Coolum from the 20-23rd October. The theme of the conference is “Between the Flags – Safe Practice in the Age of Technology”. We have a key speaker representing each group. The surgical group have invited Professor George G Youngson from Aberdeen University. Many of the anaesthetic group will know Dr David Sainsbury from Adelaide who has been invited to represent the anaesthesia cohort.

The aim of the scientific programme is to confront differing aspects of patient and individual safety from many perspectives and to give a distinct Queensland feel. Queensland is beginning a time of transition with a new model for paediatric services driven by the Queensland Children's Hospital, which is currently under construction. Many of these safety issues are at the forefront of our minds and we hope to learn from the experience of others who have been there before us.

We have a significant selection of workshops available. Many of the workshops are designed for both the anaesthetist and surgeon to participate. We are proud that we have the Mater Children's Hospital Simulation group organising two days of simulation sessions. Ultrasound workshops for both regional anaesthesia and vascular access are available. Please reserve a workshop place early so as to avoid disappointment.

The Hyatt, Coolum is a self sufficient location. For this reason and for the first time for a SPANZA annual scientific meeting, we have included the cost of the conference dinner within the cost of the registration. This dinner is planned to be held in a lovely open air venue around the pool area of the Hyatt resort which will be typically Queensland in nature; elegantly casual.

Queensland is a wonderful location to spend time with your family. We invite each delegate to take advantage of this and we hope to make the conference as family friendly as possible. We are working to have this supported by a framework of a strong scientific and social programme. We look forward to seeing you and your families this year in Coolum.
