He was awarded a personal chair in paediatric surgery by Aberdeen University in 1999 and appointed as Professor Emeritus in February 2010.

He was made CBE in the Queens Birthday Honours list in June 2009. He is Vice President and Council member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and head of professional affairs with lead responsibilities in revalidation, patient safety, and surgical standards. He is a member of the National Advisory Board of the Scottish Patient Safety Alliance and is co-convener of the colleges' Safer Operative Surgery Course and Non Technical Skills Master Classes As past chairman of the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination Board in Paediatric Surgery and member of SACs in General Surgery and Paediatric Surgery, he has a major interest in surgical education, research into human factors related to surgical performances, and service delivery for children's surgical specialties.

Associate Professor David A Sainsbury MBBS, BMedSc(Hons), FANZCA, FGLF graduated in medicine from Adelaide University in 1978; he was appointed as a staff anaesthetist at the (then) Adelaide Children's Hospital in 1986. Overseas experience included a year in Sophia Kinderziekenhuis, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He returned to the Children's Anaesthesia Department of the (now) Women's and Children’s Hospital, completing 5 years as head of that unit in 2009.

He is president of the South Australian Salaried Medical Officers Association and medical panel member of the South Australian Health Practitioners Tribunal. He is an Australian founding faculty member and Master Trainer in the TeamSTEPPS™ quality and safety program. He is a section editor for the Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing. He is on the medical board of the Overseas Specialist Surgical Association of Australia and served on numerous plastic surgical team visits to Timor and Eastern Indonesia with his wife Helen Roberts and plastic surgeon, Mark Moore.

His research interests have centred on the human interface in anaesthesia monitoring. In 1988 he designed and implemented one of the first systems for centralised data display and 'black box flight recording" of anaesthesia information. Consequently he was a consultant programmer on the initial prototype of WinChartTM He is currently intrigued by kite flying and the role of intuition in expert decision making.

SIMULATION SESSIONS

These sessions will run on both Friday 21 and Saturday 22 October.

Day/Session Time Maximum Participants
Friday session A 0800 - 1030 6 (at least 2 surgeons and 2 anaesthetists)
Friday session B 1100 - 1330 6 (at least 2 surgeons and 2 anaesthetists)
Friday session C 1430 – 1700 6 (at least 2 surgeons and 2 anaesthetists)
Friday session D 0800 – 1030 6
Friday session E 1100 – 1330 6
Friday session F 1430 – 1700 6

Anaesthetic and surgical delegates are invited to practise their crisis management skills by participating in a series of simulation sessions. Numbers will be limited to a maximum of 6 delegates per session. This will allow each delegate the chance of participating in realistic and interactive scenarios followed by debriefing and discussion lead by the simulation faculty.

Friday 21st October: Sessions are designed for joint participation between paediatric surgeons and anaesthetists. Theatre simulated scenarios will allow delegates to challenge their crisis management and resuscitation skills with an emphasis on team work between specialties.

Saturday 22nd October: Sessions will focus on the anaesthetic management of children with cardiac disease for non cardiac surgery. The sessions will be suitable for both sub-specialist paediatric anaesthetists and anaesthetists with an interest in paediatrics.

Cost: $200 per person

Paediatric Pain Challenges (Acute, Procedural and Persistent Pains)
Kathleen Cooke
This workshop will explore a general approach to pain management, followed by discussion of specific modalities including advanced pain management including an interactive scenario based discussion.
Cost: $35

Paediatric Regional Block Ultrasound Workshop
Phillip Cowlishaw/ David Hill/ Mr Adam Ball (Sonosite)
This workshop will provide an introduction to paediatric regional blockade using ultrasound. Upper limb, lower limb, and truncal blocks will be discussed. Participants will be given the opportunity to use ultrasound to identify appropriate nerves and fascial planes.
Cost: $90

Supervisors and Trainers for the Surgical Education and
Training Program (SAT SET) Course

Anthony Dilley
This three hour course provides a basic understanding of the SET program and outlines responsibilities of both the trainer and the trainee. It provides practical experience in the use of in-training assessments, both formative and summative. Participation in the SAT SET provider course is approved for 1 point per hour in Category 7 of the RACS CPD Program. For surgical delegates, formal recognition of CPD accreditation from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for this meeting is pending. We expect this will recognise 1 point per hour in Category 4: Maintenance of Clinical Knowledge and Skills. Formal recognition for CPD requires a participant evaluation form.
Cost: $0

Psychological Factors For Safe Practice
Andre Declerc
Meeting the demands of a busy anaesthetic practice with the responsibilities of home, social activities and other commitments are becoming increasingly difficult in today's age of technology. In light of the Conference theme 'Between the Flags' André will run two workshops aimed at providing participants an opportunity to reflect on psychological factors that enable safe and effective practice. André is a Clinical Psychologist and co-director of PsychologyWorks a private psychology practice located in Hobart, Tasmania. In an interactive and experiential forum André will lead discussion around key topics that will assist practitioners in developing and maintaining their practice safely 'between the flags'. Some topics may include: concept of stress, identification of significant personal stressors, management of stress and the achievement of work/life balance. There will also be time for relaxation and guided reflection. Workshop participants will be encouraged to develop their own individualised plan for 'safe practice'.
Cost: $75

Ultrasonography For Surgical And Anaesthetic Vascular Access In Children
Mike Ranger/ Mr Adam Ball (Sonosite)
Vascular access in children can be very challenging. With advances in technology and a focus on safety, ultrasound guided vascular cannulation is common practice. There is a considerable body of evidence supporting the use of ultrasound to aid central venous access in adults, but less so in children. There is even less evidence for peripheral vascular access. This workshop will explore the role of ultrasound for vascular access, reviewing basic ultrasound principles, relevant vascular anatomy and special considerations in the paediatric patient. Live models will be used to demonstrate vascular anatomy and ultrasound probe dexterity. Phantoms will be arranged to provide eye-hand co-ordination practice during cannulation.
Cost: $75

Debriefing
Andrew Heasley
How to maximise the training impact of high fidelity simulation with an effective debrief. Strategies and tips for a successful debrief including managing difficult participants. The workshop will involve video assisted debrief practice sessions.
Cost: $55
