SPANZA 2009 "New Frontiers in Paediatric Anaesthesia" is to be held at the art deco Hyatt Hotel in Canberra. The objective of the Organising Committee is to surround you with luxury and to give you a scientific programme packed to the rafters with style, insight and information. Sessions areaimed to give you direction in your practice in areas such as "Neonatal Ventilation in the Operating Theatre" and "Setting Up a Procedural Anaesthesia, Analgesia and Sedation Service". There is a session which updates information on core topics "Old Frontiers, New Approaches" which includes neurosurgical and bariatric anaesthesia and the child with congenital heart disease for non-cardiac surgery. We also have a new format in the session "Ethical Dilemmas in Paediatric Anaesthesia - a Hypothetical" an amusing romp through a thorny issue. Stephen Stayer will present our visitor's lecture - "New Frontiers in Cardiac Anaesthesia".

Workshops on ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia, the fibre-optic laryngoscopy and the difficult airway, neuraxial blockade (Geoff Frawley and Dave Murrell), public-speaking, and "Hands-on Neonatal Ventilation" (Stephen Stayer) will be held on the Friday and Saturday afternoons. In competition with the workshops will be the social program of winery tours (with our guest sommelier as guide), The Walter Burley Griffin Legacy architecture tour with our guide Professor Annabelle Pegrum in addition to galleries, spas, cycling, golf and cooking. Canberra's best jazz bands will play at the welcome reception at the Hyatt on the Thursday night and at the dinner in Anzac Hall at the War Memorial under "G" for George on the Saturday.
